Wicked Wins Fort Collins Summer Solstice!

Wicked's first tournament of the season was Fort Collins Summer Solstice, June 17-18. Fort Collins, CO is beautiful, and we had pretty fantastic weather all weekend. We enjoyed being able to breathe - something we aren't used to with the Kansas heat and humidity.

In pool play on Saturday Wicked faced off with Cutthroat, Jackwagon, Trainwreck and Elevate, all teams we have never played before. First few games we got our footing and felt pretty good on the field, winning by good margins. Rookie Ashleigh Buch had many run through D's, which would continue throughout the weekend.  Returning Wicked player Kelsey Akin reminded us of why we like her (jkjk) with numerous touches and scores. Spiral winds and ominous clouds during our last game Saturday made our game against the aggressive Elevate even more challenging. Elevate had success with our zone, completing multiple scoobers over the top of the cup. We had to work extremely hard to pick up our attitudes and focus on possession. Aggressive defense from cutter Laura Gehrt amped up our zone considerably. Captain Jenna Galletta continued that focus on offense with well timed strike cuts and quick break throws, connecting many times with Taylor Simpson, another outstanding first time Wicked player. We closed out the game with a score of 9-7 to win the last round, 4-0 Saturday record.

Sunday we received a bye to the semifinal game against Monsoon. Monsoon - with limited subs, they were incredibly fast and explosive with their cuts and defense. Veteran cutter Malaina Piyassaphan was the heart of our offense Sunday, getting easy unders and not being afraid to look up field. Ending 15-3, Wicked progressed to the championship game with a rematch against Jackwagon. Jackwagon looked exceptionally driven, chilly and successful on Sunday, beating out the 1 seed of Small Batch to meet us in the championship. The championship game was awfully tight, with the first half close and Wicked pulling away after halftime. Incredible stamina from veteran player Clare Frantz pushed our score further from Jackwagon's.  We took the game 13-9 at hard cap.

We are so happy to have won our first tournament and we can't wait to bring that enthusiasm to our practices, power weekends, and next to CHC!
